About Shipston-On-Stour

About Shipston-on-Stour

From Shipston-on-Stour you can walk or cycle immediately into the stunning beauty of the North Cotswolds, yet in just 20 minutes you can be in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon, the heart of quintessential England. So what are you going to find when you come to visit us?

You’re going to find a traditional English market town with teashops, butchers, bakers – and, yes, markets. But you’ll also find a bespoke tailor, a gingerbread maker, wet fish shop (and you can’t get much further from the sea than here!), accessories store, a mother-and-daughter barber’s shop where you can get a wet shave and much, much more. We pride ourselves on the variety of our independent shops, for which we are justly famed.

There’s also our local museum, our historic alleyways, art gallery and fascinating architecture – look for the fossilised ammonite built into an outside wall near the library. It’s a lively, friendly community here, there’s a lot going on. Come for our live music, our food festival, the Wool Fair, the Victorian evening in winter – the list just goes on and on.

From your Shipston base there are any number of day trips, letting you see what this beautiful area has to offer. There’s everything Shakespeare in Stratford, of course, also there’s Moreton-in-Marsh, Campden and Broadway; there’s the Heritage Motor Centre for cars, Compton Verney for art and artefacts, the unique National Trust gardens at Hidcote, the Batsford Arboretum – all within a half-an-hour’s drive. But then, Oxford, Warwick, Birmingham and Cheltenham each make a good day out, too. You might need to keep coming back to fit it all in!
